The Madhya Pradesh Government today waived off permit tax and a fine totalling Rs 11.96 lakh imposed on Dwarka Peeth Shankaracharya Swami Swaroopanand Saraswati for a luxury vehicle.
"We have exempted the permit tax and other dues imposed on Swaroopanandji for a luxury bus, in the state cabinet which was chaired by MP Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan," government spokesman and Health Minister Narottam Mishra told reporters today.
The cabinet's move came following the request from the Hindu pontiff.
The seer bought a bus worth Rs 15 lakh and modified it with Rs 1.30 crore two months back. His followers went to the Regional Transport Officer (RTO) at Narsinghpur district in MP for bus permit.
The RTO imposed permit or road tax of Rs 9.14 lakh, which is 7 per cent of the cost of the vehicle.
A fine of more than Rs 2.82 lakh was imposed on him, when he failed to pay the amount.
After this, he approached Chouhan and finally the MP Cabinet exempted him from the dues.
