Opposition Meghalaya People's Front (MPF) today sought Governor V Shanmuganathan's intervention in getting the government's nod on the village administration bills passed by both the Khasi and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Councils.
"We urge the Governor to immediately intervene into the matter related to the need of passing the village administration bills," Leader of Opposition Donkupar Roy told reporters after a brief meeting with the Governor here.
Roy, who is also the chief of the United Democratic Party (UDP), said the MPF delegation has also apprised the Governor on the ongoing indefinite fast by a former chief executive member of the KHADC Adelbert Nongrum and others in the city demanding the same.
"We have urged his immediate intervention so that an appeal could be made to Nongrum to end his indefinite hungerstrike," he said.
"The governor had given a patient hearing and he has also expressed his displeasure that any citizens should suffer due to such issue," Roy said
Admitting that the bills passed separately by the two autonomous district councils may have issues that needed to be sorted out, the MPF leader said the bills can be amended to suit the local conditions and demands as was the case with the Constitution.
Adelbert Nongrum, a former chief of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and another youth, Goldy Warjri, were on fast since May 16 demanding the village administration bill be passed by the government.
