Mrinal sen turned 94 today, and to mark the occasion many of his countless fans and friends went to his residence to meet the veteran film-maker who looked cheerful despite his advanced age.
Three of his path-breaking films - 'Calcutta 71', 'Ek Din Pratidin' and 'Chalchitra' - were screened at the Satyajit Ray Film & Television Institute (SRFTI) here to mark the birth anniversary.
The three films were part of a three-day Gita Sen restrospective, Debamitra Mitra, the director of SRFTI, said adding the retrospective was held in association with National Film Archive of India.
The director's son, Kunal, greeted his father's friends, including his favourite cinematographer Sashi Anand, when they called on him.
Director Atanu Ghosh wished the director in a Facebook post using one of his most quoted lines: "Keep experimenting and prosper or perish. That is the only way I know of making films".
Director-actor Anjan Dutta, who had been introduced by Sen in Chaalchitra in 1981 and got critical acclaim in Kharij in 1982, said in between shoots, "I wish Mrinalda on his birthday."
Winner of 12 international film awards, Mrinal Sen, a Padma Bhusan and Dada Saheb Phalke awardee, along with Satyajit Ray and Ritwik Ghatak gave birth to parallel cinema in the country and reshaped the profile of Indian cinema, starting with Bhuvan Shome, a landmark in modern Indian cinema.
