An assistant professor from Department of Chemistry in Maharaja Sayajirao University here and her student have been granted a patent by the government for inventing a process of mixing artificial plastic polymers and natural bio nano fillers.
The patent was granted by the central government's Patent Office to Dr Sonal Thakore, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science of MSU and her student Mayur Valodkar on a fortnight back.
"The patent was filed in August 2010 and was granted after six years. The patent was granted for our invention of process of synthesis of nano-sized hydrophobic polysaccharide derivatives. The development of biodegradable polymers is the need of the hour and has been the subject of research for more than two decades," she said.
This invention is a step towards development of environment benign plastics as well as biomedical devices, she said.
