"Pranab Mukherjee is an excellent candidate," Gandhi, a former Union Minister, told reporters after a meeting with the Finance Minister and UPA's nominee for the July 19 Presidential elections.
She said the election of the President should be by consensus.
BJP is yet to decide its stand on Mukherjee's candidature and an influential section in the party favours a contest in the Presidential elections.
Last week, Gandhi had said the country needed a President like Mukherjee.
"He is a seasoned politician....I know him for the past 30 years. We need such a president, who will work," she had said about Mukherjee at Badaun.
