In a veiled attack on the State Election Commission over the panchayat election, Trinamool Congress General Secretary Mukul Roy today said the West Bengal government has acted as per constitution and constitutional bodies should function accordingly.
"Trinamool Congress government was formed with two-thirds majority and it knows its constitutional responsibilities. It has announced dates remaining within its constitutional rights," Roy told reporters here on the TMC government unilaterally announcing a two phase poll on April 26 and 30.
"We hope other constitutional bodies should also function as per constitution," he said in an obvious reference to the SEC.
Roy, a former Railway minister, also did not attach much importance to state Election Commissioner Mira Pandey meeting Governor M K Narayanan for a second time during the day saying, "Anybody can meet the Governor."
To a question, he said there was no crisis and there was still time to hold the election. The election is due in May.
The SEC had suggested a three-phase election under the supervision of central forces.
Stating that TMC was ready to face the election any time, he claimed that those facing defeat were speaking about deferring the polls.
He said that the panchayat election would be a vote for change since most panchayat bodies were now with the CPIM.
