Days after accusing the West Bengal State Election Commission of being partial towards the Left Front, Trinamool Congress general secretary Mukul Roy today reminded the poll panel to act within its limits and that crossing limits was harmful for democracy.
"India is the largest democracy of the world. If every institution works within limits, it will strengthen our democracy. Every institution of our country whether it is central government, state government, Central Election Commission, State Election Commission (SEC) or any other, each one has its limits. Each one should act within its limits because that is what is needed to make our democracy much stronger," Roy told reporters here.
Taking exception to the SEC's recommendation of holding panchayat polls in West Bengal in three phases under the supervision of central forces, Roy had last week accused the poll panel of being partial to the Left Front.
Roy had then alleged that as the State Election Commissioner was appointed during the previous regime, she was "trying to help" the Left.
Asked if the TMC agrees with the SEC's proposal for conducting Panchayat polls under the supervision of central forces, Roy said, " We will sweep the panchayat polls no matter whether they are held under the supervision of state police, central police or military. The people of Bengal wants us to win in the Panchayat polls.
