Maharashtra Transport Commissioner Mahesh Zagade today released a commemorative special cover on Mumbai's world-famous dabbawalas (tiffin carriers) here.
Raghunath Medge, president, Mumbai Dabawala Association, was also present at the function at Mumbai General Post Office premises.
The three-day philately exhibition 'MUMBAIPEX 2015', organised by GPO, also started today.
Complementing the Dabbawalas for rendering a valuable service to the society, Zagade said their logistics management is so sophisticated that it has become part of management studies in reputed institutions.
Their accurate delivery system was a case study at the Indian Institute of Management as well as the Harvard Business School.
Mumbai Dabbawalas every day deliver nearly 2 lakh lunch boxes to offices, employing about 4-5 thousand personnel.
The Dabbawalas, who have developed their own unique identity code, rarely mis-deliver the lunch box and their service is often said to be of 'Six Sigma' standard.
Medge expressed happiness over India Post recognising their services. He informed the audience that their unique identification code was inspired by the postal PIN.
The expo showcases rare stamp collections of 25 philatelists, covering varied themes. India Post would be releasing special covers on every day of the exhibition.
