Mumbai woman gets heart from Chennai man

A heart harvested from a 27-year-old road traffic accident victim was successfully transplanted in a 21-year-old woman from Mumbai, a senior doctor at Fortis Malar Hospitals here said today.
"The recipient Hvovi Minocherhomji is recovering well and the parents are very happy," Dr K R Balakrishnan, Director Cardiac Sciences, Fortis Malar told PTI.
After harvesting the heart from the brain dead patient, it had to be implanted within four hours and it was managed well with police help, he added.
The woman was suffering from end stage heart failure for the past four years. A BCom student, she was advised to go in for a transplant.
Initially, the family planned to go to the US. However, the plan was dropped considering the long wait for organ.
After learning about the good facilities for transplants here she was admitted to Fortis Malar two weeks ago. Hvovi's name was enrolled in the State Organ Transplant Registry.

Meanwhile, Loganathan the accident victim was declared brain dead and his family agreed to donate his organs.
The donor's heart and kidneys were given to Fortis Malar, liver to Christian Medical College in Vellore, the skin to Right Hospitals and eyes to Government Ophthalmic Hospital here.
The heart safely placed in a container was transported to the Fortis Malar Hospital in Adyar 12 km away in 14 minutes from the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in Park Town. This was done with the support of the city traffic police as officials blocked traffic en route.
Rajalakshmi, mother of the accident victim, said the only solace for her was that the organs of her son would give a new lease of life to several persons. The body of the victim was taken today to his native town of Mathuranthakam in Kancheepuram District.
Capt Aspy P Minocherhomji and Armaity, parents of the recipient, told reporters that they were "very thankful to the donor and the Tamil Nadu government" which facilitated quick transfer of the heart.
