Maharashtra Legislative Council Chairman Ramraje Naik Nimbalkar today directed Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to conduct a probe after opposition leader Dhananjay Munde produced a phone claiming that it was used by gangster Abu Salem in jail.
Munde caused a sensation in the Upper House after he produced the phone and demanded a probe into how can the inmate like Salem got access to such "luxuries" in jail.
"I have in my hand the phone used by Abu Salem in jail. We all know for which crime he is languishing in the prison. If he is getting such luxuries in jail, what is the condition of prisons in our state?" Munde (NCP) questioned.
The extradited gangster was convicted by a special court in the 1993 Mumbai serial bomb blasts case. He is currently lodged in Taloja jail in Navi Mumbai.
However, Munde didn't take name of any jail during his speech.
"I am ready for any inquiry (to ascertain if this is actually the phone used by Salem). How can an anti-national get such facilities in jail? This phone should be sent for forensic analysis to ascertain the truth. Many more things would be revealed in the inquiry," he said while speaking on a motion moved by him on the last day of the monsoon session.
Taking a serious note, the Chairman said, "This issue is very serious. I direct you (the chief minister) to conduct an immediate probe to ascertain the facts into the claims (made by Munde)".

In a dig, Munde said the BJP led government should make corruption "legal" as it is not taking any action against two ministers.
"The Opposition is now feeling ashamed to even speak against corruption as no action is being taken against the ministers despite damning evidences against them.
"Remember the very people who made you sit on their heads thinking you will work against corruption will not hesitate in trampling you. All investigative agencies are now backing corruption discreetly," Munde said.
The NCP leader demanded an inquiry into the allegations of corruption against a BJP and a Shiv Sena ministers under the Commission of Inquiries Act by a High Court judge.
In his reply, Fadnavis said a probe by the state Lokayukta will be conducted against state Housing Minister Prakash Mehta (BJP).
On allegations of illegally denotifying the government land being levelled against Industries Minister Subhash Desai of Shiv Sena, Fadnavis said the government will request the Lokayukta to consider his case and if it does not work out, an independent probe will be conducted against him.
