Murder, kidnapping, rape on rise in Assam since 2011: Minister

There has been a constant rise in almost all major crimes, including murder, kidnapping, rape, extortion and theft in Assam in the last four years, the Assembly was informed today.
At least 5,500 persons were killed, over 17,800 kidnapped and more than 7,400 raped across Assam since 2011, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Rockybul Hussain said in a written reply to a query by AGP MLA Phani Bhusan Choudhury.
The minister said the state had witnessed a total of 5,550 deaths due to various crimes between 2011 and 2014.
He said 1,321 persons were killed in 2011, while 1,368, 1,383 and 1,478 people lost their lives in 2012, 2013 and 2014 respectively.
During this period, Assam witnessed 17,806 cases of kidnapping, Hussain said on behalf of the Home Minister.
The number of kidnapping incidents increased every with reporting of 3,785 cases in 2011, 3,812 in 2012, 4,831 in 2013 and 5,378 in 2014.

From 2011 to 2014, 7,430 rape cases were registered across the state, he added.
The highest number of rapes were seen taking place last year with 2,047 cases, followed by 1,960, 1,716 and 1,707 incidents in 2013, 2012 and 2011 respectively.
The extortion cases also rose gradually with registration of 992 incidents in 2011, 1,074 in 2012, 1,214 in 2013 and 1,357 in 2014, the Minister said.
He said the total number of theft cases stood at 40,634 in the four year period under review with the highest being reported at 12,198 in 2014.
It is followed by 10,692 thefts in 2013, 9,394 in 2012 and 8,350 in 2011, he added.
