A brawl over consumption of beer and mobile Internet package which led to the death of a youth has resulted in award of life imprisonment by a Delhi court to his colleague who, along with him, was working at the bunglow here alloted to the then Mizoram's Chief Secretary.
The court awarded the jail term to 27-year-old Vikram Chhetri, a native of Mizoram, for murdering with a chopper Puia who was working as a driver at the chief secretary's bunglow at Ansari Road in Daryaganj here.
According to the police, the motive behind the murder was that a quarrel had taken place between Vikram, who was working as a cook, and Puia on exhaustion of mobile Internet package and beer bottle of the victim by the accused.
"Taking into account the circumstances in consideration, I am of the considered opinion that the prosecution has been able to prove that the deceased was murdered by the accused with the chopper in the servant quarter of Bunglow No.115, Ansari Road, Darya Ganj, New Delhi," Additional Sessions Judge Atul Kumar Garg.
"These evidence are very crucial in this case because of motive. There was a quarrel between the accused (Vikram) as well as the deceased (Puia) over the beer bottle," the judge said adding that strong motive for the offence has been established from the events.
The court awarded life term to Vikram saying that case has not been covered in the 'rarest of rare' category warranting death penalty.
According to the prosecution, on the intervening night of June 30-July 1, 2013, Vikram murdered Puia at around 2.30 am at the bunglow in Darya Ganj here. Vikram then fled the spot and was arrested from Gauhati.
