In the run up to the 2017 Uttar Pradesh elections, an organisation representing Shia Ulamas today presented a proposal to form a political platform.
During a meeting of Ulamas, Shia 'anjumans' and scholars held under the aegis of Majlis-e-Ulama-e-Hind, a proposal to form a political platform was presented.
It was decided that an announcement would be made after consulting other Ulamas and other Muslim scholars.
Member of All India Muslim Personal Law Board Maulana Kalbe Jawwad said that the front would try to unite Ulamas and anjmanms.
He said that a political front would be constituted later in which along with Shias and Sunni, members of other religions would also be included.
Jawwad said that the front would work on politics for development, peace and unity in the country, but would not participate in the elections.

He alleged that the governments had been treating Shia Muslims in a step-motherly way and despite having a considerable population, they failed to become a political power.
Raising questions over the constitution of the proposed front, spokesman of All India Shia Personal Law Board Maulana Yasoob Abbas said that earlier also Jawwad had formed a political front and this time he should disclose his agenda.
"Maulana Jawwad had formed a People Democratic Front four years back and held meetings. Now he has entered the political field. This time he should disclose his agenda," he said.
