The unidentified gang members encircled N Akbar and attacked him with sharp edged weapons in Ice House locality this morning, police said.
The victim was rushed to a hospital where he succumbed to injuries.
Police have stepped up vigil and additional personnel deployed in the locality, a predominantly Muslim neighbourhood, they added.
"Investigation is on. We are pursuing certain leads and will soon be apprehending the culprits," a police official said.
