Tomas Ojea Quintana said today it was a terrifying experience that hammered home the level of tension in the region.
During his 10-day visit to the country, Quintana toured areas that have been hit by religious violence in the last year.
More than 250 people have been killed, mostly Muslims and another 1,40,000 have been forced to flee their homes.
He said mobs surrounded his convoy in Meikhtila, forcing him to cut short his visit there.
