Twelve agitating students
including Lalhmachhuana, president of the Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP) or Mizo students federation, were arrested by the Police today while demonstrating outside the Mizoram Higher and Technical Education department's Technical wing at Chaltlang locality here.
The arrested students also included MZP's treasurer Lalruatkima and assistant general secretary Joseph Lalhmangaihzuala.
Police officers said the students were arrested and booked under section 188 of the IPC for violating prohibitory orders issued by the District Magistrate of Aizawl under section 144 of the CrPC.
People were agitating outside the Technical Wing of Higher and Technical Education department today, the fifth day of the stir, protesting selection of 38 students belonging to the Chakma community under the Category-I of the State Technical Entrance Examination (STEE) rules.
The MZP maintained that only indigenous people could be selected under Category-I of the STEE rules and the Chakmas were not indigenous community in Mizoram as their homeland was the Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh.
The MZP leadership alleged the Police arrested its leaders when the agitators were dispersing.
