"Any self-respecting Solicitor General will resign. We will raise this issue in Parliament and ask the government why he had to step down," senior BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi told reporters in reply to a question.

"Nariman should himself speak out about what went wrong," Joshi said. He maintained that the government should explain why two Solicitor Generals had to step down in the same regime.

Nariman is the second Solicitor General in the UPA-II government to submit his resignation. He reportedly put in his papers yesterday due to differences with Law Minister Ashwani Kumar.

Earlier, in July 2011, then Solicitor General Gopal Subramanian had resigned from the post when the government had asked Nariman to fight the 2G spectrum allocation case.
