The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has issued notices for attachment of the city Congress office and Sarvajanik Vachnalaya (public library) for their failure to clear Property Tax dues.

The civic body has granted 21 days to both the entities to clear their tax outstanding.

The NMC has already started attaching properties of other property tax defaulters, said Deputy Commissioner (Tax) Rohidas Dorkulkar.

The Congress Bhawan, which houses the city unit office of the party, is situated on the ground floor of a three-storey building along M G Road, while the public library is situated in Shalimar area of the city.

According to Dorkulkar, property tax of Rs 26.63 lakh is due on the Congress office while the tax outstanding for the public library is Rs 7.78 lakh.

The officer said the civic body has seized 16 mobile phone towers, owned by the Bharat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL), for defaulting on the property tax to the tune of Rs 1.97 crore in the last 12 years.

He said the NMC sealed 16 BSNL towers barring three in Indira Nagar, Cidco and Nashik Road areas as the BSNL had obtained a stay from the Bombay High Court in 2006 against the NMC action.

City Congress president Sharad Aher said they had paid Rs 10 lakh in property tax two years ago.

"We would meet the NMC authorities soon," he said.

Sarvajanik Vachnalaya chief secretary Shrikant Beni said the government had exempted those libraries, which are over 100 years old, from paying property tax.

The library was founded in 1840.

"Our legal battle will continue," he said.
