Altogether 31 teams comprising 600 players are participating in the five-day championship in 10 weight categories, Arunachal Taekwondo Association (ATA) President Kipa Kaha said.

Poomse, the competition of imaginary fighting movement, was excluded from this edition of the championship by the Taekwondo Federation of India (TFI) at the request of the ATA due to unavailability of accommodation facility.

Taekwondo made its first appearance as demonstration sports in Seoul Olympics in South Korea in 1988. It became regular and full medal sport at Sydney Summer Olympics in 2000.

TFI Secretary General Praveen Kumar said that the winners of the championship would participate in the national championship to be held in Bhopal from January 18 to 26 next year.

"They will also participate in the Senior National Taekwondo Championship to be held in Bangalore from April next year," Kumar said.
