National Lok Adalat settles 6.6 lakh cases across the country

Around 6.6 lakh cases were settled in the National Lok Adalat held across the country at all levels from taluk courts to the High Courts on April 8.
Out of 6.6 lakh cases, the second National Lok Adalat of this year has settled 3.68 lakh pending cases and 2.92 lakh pre-litigation matters, a release issued by National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) said.
"The cases that have been settled include matrimonial disputes, partition suits, other civil matters, cheque bounce cases instituted under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, claim cases preferred under Motor Vehicles Act, revenue disputes pending in the courts, criminal compoundable cases and service matters relating to pension, retiral benefits, etc," the release said.

In certain states, Lok Adalats have also taken up old partitions suits where parties are really at variance, but have settled, it said.
It has been decided to organise bi-monthly national Lok Adalat for both pending and pre-litigative case.
NALSA said that Supreme Court judge Justice Dipak Misra, who is also its executive Chairman, has emphasised on reducing the burden of courts by developing a culture of settlement pertaining to real contesting matters.
A set of guidelines has been issued to all the state legal service authorities to concentrate to see that parties in contest arrive at amicable settlement during Lok Adalats, it said.

The National Lok Adalat was organised under the patronage of Chief Justice of India Justice J S Khehar and Justice Misra across the nation.
