The Rs 50 crore structure is being constructed on a 6.3-acre plot in the heart of the national capital's diplomatic zone of Chanakyapuri, eight years after a similar structure was dismantled following protests by activists, who objected to its height.
As per the new plan, names of around 50,000 martyrs from all police forces in the country will be inscribed at the 'Wall of Valour'. There will be a police museum, a parade ground, beside others.
"Around 60 per cent work of the memorial is completed and we are trying to finish the remaining work by September so that it could be inaugurated on October 21, the national police commemoration day," said M K Singla, Special Secretary (Internal Security) in the Home Ministry.
The memorial is being built to honour the various police forces, from the local to the central paramilitary forces.
