National road safety week underway in AP

The 28th National Road Safety Week is currently underway in Andhra Pradesh from January 19 to 25, said Sidda Raghava Rao, minister for transport, roads and buildings in the state.
According to the report of Ministry of Road Transport and Highways 2015 nearly one lakh people lost their lives and five lakh were injured in road accidents throughout India, the minister said.
In Andhra Pradesh 8,114 people lost their lives and 29,893 people were injured in 2015, and 7,837 people lost their lives and 27,872 people were injured in 2016, he said.
Highest number of deaths 711 were reported in Guntur district and lowest 217 in Srikakulam district in 2016, said the minister.
The aim of celebrating the road safety week is to promote safety measures in community, schools, colleges, work places and to decrease road accidents, he added.
