Congress MP Naveen Jindal today urged the Election Commission to extend the postal ballot system in order to avoid any kind of absentee voting.
He has asked the Commission to enable migrant workers and students studying outside their constituency where their vote is registered, senior and ailing citizens and under-trial prisoners who are yet to be convicted, to vote in an alternative manner.
"The Election Commissioner promised that the Election Commission will look into the feasibility of extending absentee voting rights to various categories of the voter," he said.
"It is imperative that the country now expands the postal ballot system to allow all Indian citizens to exercise their right to vote by post or any other form of absentee voting, such as Internet voting, proxy voting, etc as is being done in other countries," Jindal said in a statement after his meeting with Election Commissioners H S Brahma and Nasim Zaidi.
He claimed the Commission had assured to consider his proposal providing alternative voting to NRIs.
