An Indian Navy officer was killed when his car rammed into a stationary truck on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, police said today.
Shrikanth Naagipogu (26), a Lieutenant, was posted at 'INS Shivaji', an Indian Naval station located in Lonavala, about 120km from here in Pune district. The 26-year-old was a native of Andhra Pradesh, they said.
Naagipogu was on his way to Pune when his car rammed into a stationary truck on the expressway ahead of Bhatan tunnel near Kon village on Sunday morning, said an official attached to the Panvel Taluka police station said.
Vehicles are not allowed to stop on the 95-km-long expressway.
Truck driver Dilwar Patel had parked his vehicle on the roadside after its engine developed some technical snag. However, he hadn't put up any signal to warn incoming vehicles, the police official said.
The Naval officer sustained serious head injuries in the mishap and was rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival, the official said.
The truck driver has been arrested and booked under IPC sections 279 (rash driving), 304 A (causing death by negligence) and 427 (mischief causing damage), he added.
