Security in the Naxal-hit parts of Chhattisgarh, especially Bastar region, has been intensified as Maoists are observing the 'Peoples' Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA) Week' from tomorrow, police said today.
"Security has been beefed up at police stations, security forces' camps and outposts while patrolling has been intensified in the forested interiors of Bastar division in view of PLGA week," said Inspector General of Police, Bastar Range, SRP Kalluri.
Bastar division comprises seven districts -- Dantewada, Bijapur, Bastar, Narayanpur, Kondagaon, Sukma and Kanker.
According to Kalluri, the morale of the security forces is up after the success of operations conducted last month in which 18 rebels, most of them commander-rank cadres, were killed in separate gun-battles across Bastar.
"We will continue that trend this month too," he said.
"Aggressive intelligence-based operations will continue in the core Maoist areas with the composite (state and central) forces," he added.
Three central committee members of the erstwhile CPI(ML)/ Peoples' War, were killed on December 1, 1999, and PLGA was formed next year. Since 2000, PLGA Week is observed by Naxals between December 2 and 8 in memory of these leaders.
The naxals hold meetings and gatherings during this period as they engage in propaganda, recruit new members and review operations, besides resorting to damaging roads, public property and carrying out attacks on security forces.
