"We laud the decisive role of the Chief Minister in getting this historic initiative through, after braving many odds," Minister for Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution (CAPD) Choudhry Mohammed Ramzan and NC Provincial president Devender Singh Rana said in a statement here.
"This is the single most landmark achievement after the historic land to tiller law enacted by Sheikh Abdullah... It has infused a new vigour and enthusiasm among the people, irrespective of their regional or political affiliations," the minister said at a public hearing at Sher-e-Kashmir Bhavan.
On public distribution system, the minister hinted at setting up of government ration depots in the state, by dispensing with the prevailing dealer system for maximum consumer satisfaction.
He said ways and modalities in this regard were being worked out, which include rehabilitation of the dealers and streamlining the distribution system.
He said efforts are underway to ensure the coverage of the entire population under rationing in a phased manner.
As of now 99 lakh people are getting the rations, while the state government is contemplating to cover another 10 lakhs by utilising the savings on account of transportation of foodgrains, he said.
