The Nationalist Congress Party today sought reservation for economically weaker sections from all castes and religions, including Brahmins and Muslims.
State unit NCP president Bhaskar Jadhav told reporters that the party felt reservation should be given to those who are economically backward irrespective of their castes.
"Even a poor Brahmin or a Muslim could be included in reservations. The reservations should be given without disturbing constitutional framework. We will not allow reduction in the quota meant for any of the existing categories," Jadhav said.
NCP MLC Vinayak Mete has been fighting for the cause of Maratha reservation and demanding the inclusion of the community in the Other Backward Classes (OBC).
Party's state unit working president Jitendra Awhad said, "We are not opposing the reservation to the Maratha community, but it should be over and above the existing constitutional reservations".
NCP also opposed provisions in the land ceiling draft released by the central government. Awhad said the provisions in the draft will ruin the agriculture industry.
