Deokar was arrested this morning for his alleged involvement in a 1997 housing scam related to construction of 11,000 low-cost houses in Jalgaon, north Maharashtra.

Deokar, who was a member of Jalgaon Municipal Council between 1995 and 2000, was summoned to the Zilla Peth police station at Jalgaon and arrested. He was remanded to 14 day judicial custody.

Talking to reporters, the state unit NCP president Madhukar Pichad said Deokar has already submitted his resignation to the party.

"We will take a call on whether to accept it or not based on what action police and judiciary takes," he added.
