A two-member team of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) today visited Olakudi in the district and conducted an inquiry into the death of a 23-year-old dalit man and a woman whose bodies were found hanging from a tree last month.
Bodies of the duo were found hanging from a tree on April 20 in an isolated area in Athupakkam village near Olakudi.
The bodies were in a decomposed state. The two were reportedly in love and belonged to different communities. The deceased woman was 24-years-old.
Police investigation revealed that the duo allegedly committed suicide.
However, several organisations, including the Federation for Protection of Dalits and Minorities, Democratic Youth Federation of India, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi and others, raised suspicion on the deaths and carried out agitations demanding a CBI probe.
Against this background, a two-member team from NCSC, comprising Research Officer C Chandraprabha and Investigating Officer A Iniyan, visited Olakudi and conducted inquiries with the deceased's man family.
They also visited Athupakkam village.
Chandraprabha said NCSC was conducting the inquiry acting on media reports about the incident. The team would submit a report to the commission based on its findings.
