NCST summons SSP over assault of former woman sarpanch

Taking suo moto cognisance of media reports about alleged police assault of a former woman sarpanch here, the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes today summoned Senior Superintendent of Police and asked him to submit action report within seven days before it.
"I have summoned SSP (Rural) of the district and asked him to probe the matter and lodge case against policemen involved in the incident," NCST Deputy Chairman Kumar Verka said.
"I have also asked the SSP to submit action report before the NCST within seven days. If report is not submitted, all senior police officers will be summoned," Verka said.
Former sarpanch Rajni had alleged that she and her husband Iqbal Singh, sarpanch of Kalyanpur village, were beaten up at their residence by some police officials on Tuesday.
Earlier, Verka had summoned Deputy Inspector General and Assistant Superintendent of Police and asked them information about the incident.
SSP (Rural) Yurinder Singh Heyar told Verka that directions have been given to Superintendent of Police to probe the charges.

Rajni had alleged that some police officials forcefully entered her house on Tuesday and started beating her and her husband Iqbal for opposing the "dictatorial rule" of the Station Officer in the village.
The police, however, has denied the allegations and claimed that an attempt to murder case had been registered against Iqbal and they had visited their residence in this regard.
After the incident, villagers protested outside the police station, following which the station officer and a Special Sub Inspector were shunted to police lines.
