The National Commission for Women (NCW) has been functioning without a full-time chairperson since the expiry of Lalitha Kumaramangalam's three-year term last month.
NCW member Rekha Sharma has been given the additional charge of chairperson of the women's body, with effect from September 29, 2017.
"My three-year tenure expired last month and I did not seek an extension. I am a BJP worker and I will do whatever the party asks me to do," Kumaramangalam told PTI.
Kumaramangalam was diagnosed with stage II breast cancer in December, 2016.
A BJP national executive member then, Kumaramangalam was appointed to the post in September 2014.
Kumaramangalam and Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi had been at loggerheads on several occasions.
Tensions between the two peaked when Maneka Gandhi reprimanded Kumaramangalam at a meeting of officials of the ministry and the NCW over the commission issuing summons to actor Salman Khan over his controversial remarks comparing his rigorous shooting routine for a film with rape.
Within days, when the ministry asked the NCW to monitor cases of online abuse, Kumaramangalam shot down the idea and told PTI that it would amount to "policing the net" and was "physically impossible" to achieve.
