The National Commission for Women today demanded an "unconditional apology" from Samajwadi Party leader Naresh Agrawal for his remarks that the law to prevent sexual harassment of women at workplace may be misused and result in a situation where women themselves are deprived of justice.
Member of NCW, Nirmala Samant Prabhavalkar today termed his remarks as "derogatory and irresponsible".
"What he said is highly derogatory. He, as a member of Parliament, should fight for equal rights of women. Moreover, all these laws are made in Parliament and he is a party to it. Despite being in such a respectable position, he has made an irresponsible statement. We demand an uncoditional apology from him," Prabhavalkar said.
Agrawal today stoked a controversy by saying "I had apprehended that this law may also be misused like the anti-dowry law and may result in a situation in which women themselves are deprived of justice," he said.
He further said officers are "scared" to appoint women as their personal assistants after the passage of the bill to prevent sexual harassment of women at workplace.
