North Delhi Municipal Corporation has earned over Rs 25 crore in parking fee in just six months this year, over one-and-a-half times of the total revenue generated from it last year.
"Discontinuing the earlier process of one-time parking licence fee for an year, we have started charging three months advance. The idea of giving three months contract and charging advance has been a great success," said Bharat Bhushan Madan chairman of Remunerative Projects (RP) Cell of NDMC.
"Last year we earned around Rs 15.1 crore from parking fees while in this year we have earned over Rs 24 crore in the first two quarters itself," he said.
The corporation's changed policy of giving three months contract has also helped in solving the problems of non- payment by defaulting contractors and accumulating losses due to it, a senior municipal official said.
Also, in case of any dispute, the contractor may leave after three months and the corporation will not have any dues to recover, he added.
"We earned Rs 12.10 crore in the April-September quarter as quarterly parking licence fees and an equal amount in the current quarter," he said.

The jump in revenue from parking fee has also happened due to improved monitoring of earnings of different parking lots of the corporation, Madan said.
The NDMC has a total of 91 parking areas out of which 46 have been given on contract under the advance payment scheme.
We have also decided to issue tender to allot all the 91 authorised parking sites in its jurisdiction "en bloc" to a single contractor, he said.
The parking sites presently running under contract, may continue to run as it is till the period of contract is over. After that, these would also be clubbed and auctioned as single entity after paying three-month advance, he added.
