Tightening its vigil on incidents of waste burning in its areas, the New Delhi Municipal Council has imposed a fine of Rs 5000 on an employee of Meghalaya house who was found burning leaves.
"Sri Chand, an employee of Meghalaya house was spotted burning dry leaves and other waste inside the building premises yesterday. We informed Delhi police and fire services which reached on the spot and an FIR was later registered against the employee," NDMC spokesperson Jagjivan Bakshi said.
"NDMC also issued a notice to him informing that a fine of Rs 5000 has been imposed on him for polluting environment. He was asked to deposit the fine or appear before the Hon'ble National Green Tribunal on May 18," he added.
The NDMC official confirmed that Chand today deposited the fine.
The National Green Tribunal had last month pulled up the civic body over its failure to check waste burning in Lodhi Garden and had asked it to be more vigilant and careful in future regarding such incidents.
