In an effort to check the nuisance of spitting and littering in areas like Connaught Place and to guide people visiting such localities, NDMC today launched a 'May I Help You' force on the occasion of Independence Day.
Starting off with a squad of 50 trained guards, the force will initially patrol parks like Lodhi Garden and Talkatora Garden followed by busy market areas like Connaught Place and Khan Market.
Besides assisting the general public and tourists, the squad has also been tasked with the prevention of littering in their patrol areas, said New Delhi Municipal Council chairperson Jalal Shrivastava.
The first batch of such guards, equipped with walkie- talkies, whistles and trained in first aid and soft skills, was today launched here on the occasion of Independence Day.
"There is still some months of training left for some of these personnel. The force will be ready in a few months and then we will deploy them," Shrivastava said.
The week-long Independence Day celebrations organised by NDMC also ended here today.
Among the events organised to mark August 15 were a human chain formation from India Gate to Connaught Place by 5,500 schoolchildren, flash mob dance by the employees of the civic body, musical concerts at Central Park and laser shows and fireworks at Connaught Place.
Shrivastava, meanwhile, said that the civic agency has handed over 50kg of fruits, etc. To the forest department for placing at four sites in the Ridge area with a view to preventing monkeys from leaving the forested zone in search of food and thus wreaking havoc in the urban areas.
