The nominated members of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) have reacted sharply to Mayor Ravinder Gupta's move to get them dismissed over their recent protest in the House, terming his step as "undemocratic".
Gupta has written to Lt Governor Najeeb Jung seeking dismissal of those members, alleging they "obstructed" proceedings of the civic body.
On September 28, member of the Opposition led by Congress councillor Mukesh Goel had protested against the BJP-ruled NDMC and demanded the resignation of the Mayor over rising number of dengue cases in the city, with maximum cases being reported from areas under the civic body.
The BJP-ruled NDMC has 9 nominated members, all from Congress. One other member had crossed to BJP before Delhi elections.
"This is not the first time that BJP is doing it, previous year too the then Leader of House belonging to party had moved the proposal which was not accepted," nominated Congress member Surender Solanki alleged.
"The Mayor's move is completely undemocratic and aimed at preventing Opposition from raising serious issues like corruption and failure of the corporation on the dengue front," he said.
In his letter to Jung, the Mayor said "On September 28, general house meeting of North Delhi Municipal Corporation the Congress party along with the nominated members shouted slogans in the Well of House".
"Nominated members should have special knowledge of field that should enrich the functioning of corporation rather than playing party politics. But the nominated member are neither maintaining decorum of the House nor have any respect to the Mayor's chair," Gupta wrote in his letter.
Solanki further allaged that "The nominated members were earlier not administered oath by the BJP-ruled civic body, then they denied us voting right for which they spent a significant amount of public money in litigation but failed as we got the right from the court."
Ten members each, all belonging to Congress were nominated to the North, South and East Corporations in September 2013 by the previous government and they form a formidable Opposition alongwith other elected members challenging BJP-dominated House of the three coporations.
