Opposition Congress in the BJP-ruled North Delhi Municipal Corporation today sought to corner the party over the issue of street dog menace, alleging that NDMC's dog sterilisation measures were "not enough" and "unable" to catch up with their fresh breeding.
The allegations of Congress councillor and Leader of House Mukesh Goel came amid a growing concern among the citizens for their safety after a seven-year-old boy was mauled to death recently by a pack of dogs.
"The NDMC is not doing enough to curb the street dog menace. And, besides, all these claims of thousands of dogs being sterilised in last few years, it is quite clear that not enough has been done. While they carry sterilisation, parallely fresh breeding is taking place," he alleged.
Goel was speaking during the Standing Committee meet of the NDMC at the Civic Centre.
According to NDMC, nearly 1,600 dogs have been sterilised this year till June 30.
"In year 2012-13, 5069 dogs were sterilised, in 2013-14 it was 5722, and in 2014-15 the number stood at 6,746," a senior NDMC official said.
The opposition also circulated images to the press showing street dogs roaming the premises of the Civic Centre, headquarters of the North and the South Corporations.
