NEC member for 75% reservation for medical students from NE
Press Trust of India Shillong Highlighting the shortages of doctors serving in remote villages in north eastern states, North Eastern Council member C K Das today pitched for a 75 per cent reservation for students from the region in all medical colleges here to mitigate the crisis.
"An estimated 50 per cent of the seats for post graduate in medicines in colleges in the region are reserved for people from outside the region. We don't have sufficient numbers of specialists like cardiologist, anaesthesiologist, neurologist and others," Das told reporters on the sidelines of a regional review meet on health sector held at the NEC secretariat here.
"This is becoming the system for the country. So, today, I'll raise the issue that medical colleges in NE should reserve at least 75 per cent of their seats for the MBBS students of NE region," the NEC member said.
"Only if this is considered, the region will have more doctors and more colleges," he said.
Das also pointed out that at present there is also shortages of doctors with MD degrees to teach.
Admitting that lack of medical colleges also compounded the problem in states like Meghalaya, the NEC member, however, assured that the council will try to help set up medical colleges if the state government took decisions in this regards.
At the review meeting, Das and another NEC member G Kamei also took stock of the implementation of Centrally-sponsored programs on health with health department officials from Meghalaya, Assam, Sikkim, Tripura and all eight north eastern states.
