North Eastern Council (NEC) member Chandra Kanta Das today advocated formulating an action plan to develop the dairy sector of the region for becoming self-sufficient in milk production.
"Without wasting any more time, it is important to develop an action plan for milk production and dairy sector of the North East. It should start within one or two years," Das said at a consultative meeting on milk production here.
He said only six per cent of the total cattle population in the region are hybrid, rest all are low quality variants.
"Solution to North East is having maximum number of cooperatives like Amul in Gujarat. It may be smaller in size also. For various reasons, North East cannot be an industrial giant. So we have to develop our expertise in agriculture field," Das said.
If the region increases production of items like milk, fish, pork, chicken and egg to become self-sufficient, the income of North East can go up by even Rs 50,000 crore, he said.
"Recently NITI Aayog published a three-year action plan. It mentioned that per capita milk consumption in North East is very low. We also have to address this issue," Das said.
Commenting on the issue, NEC Secretary Ram Muivah said the funding organisation has already received proposals from Sikkim, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura that are under consideration.
