'Neerja' earns Rs 22.01 crores in opening weekend

Sonam Kapoor-starrer "Neerja", a biopic based on the life of slained air hostess Neerja Bhanot, has earned Rs 22.01 crores in its opening weekend, producers said.
The Ram Madhvani helmed film is a story about the senior flight attendant, who died saving 360 lives on a Pan Am flight that was hijacked in Karachi in 1986.
The film has been growing with a strong word of mouth in the Indian markets.
"We are humbled with the audience response to 'Neerja'! Viewers across the country have connected to this emotional and heart-touching story of a 23-year-old girl who did something extraordinary.
"The film is resonating across demographics in India as also with Indians across the world," Vijay Singh, CEO of Fox Star Studios, which has produced the film, said in a statement.
The movie has raked in USD 1.56 million in international markets.
In the US, "Neerja" earned USD 635, 202, which is the the highest opening weekend of a female centric. In the UK, the film collected USD 153,386, USD 84,299 in Australia, its Middle East collection is USD 575, 406 and USD 113, 394 from the rest of the world.
"Neerja" also stars Shabana Azmi, Shekhar Ravjiani and Kavi Shastri.
