Nepal's main opposition party Nepali Congress today slammed former prime minister Prachanda for floating the idea of presidential system of governance through a Constitutional amendment.

Nepali Congress (NC) leader Ram Chandra Paudel said that his party would not accept the directly-elected executive presidential system.

Addressing the first general assembly of Province No. 4 in Tanahun district of western Nepal, Paudel expressed his dissatisfaction over views expressed by co-chairman of the ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP) Prachana that Nepal should adopt the directly-elected executive presidential system.

Prachanda has said that his party would prefer directly-elected president with executive power instead of the present Parliamentary system. He said that his party requirs two-third majority in Parliament to adopt the new system of governance through a Constitutional amendment.

Poudel said that parliamentary system based on pluralism is appropriate for Nepal.

"Prachanda has tried to trigger political debate in the country by floating the idea of directly-elected executive presidential system. Such kinds of political debate will halt the country's development initiatives," Poudel said as he warned that democracy will be at stake if the party with two-third majority talks about such a system.
