A woman in her 20s from Nepal was mauled to death by a leopard at Chopda village, about 17 kms from here, forest officials said here today.
22-year-old Parvati was dragged from her courtyard by the big cat when she was breastfeeding her two-and-a-half-month old son yesterday.
As the villagers ran after the leopard, it left the woman near a bush about 15 metres away from the courtyard, the officials said.
However, the woman succumbed to her injuries while being taken to the hospital at Haldwani where she was declared brought dead.
Parvati had come from Nepal along with her husband Jeevan Singh and son last week in search of work.
A compensation of Rs 5,000 has been paid to the victim's family and her body handed over to them.
Four camera traps have been installed in Chopda village to monitor the movement of the leopard, Divisional Forest Officer, Nainital Parag Dhakate said.
A cage has also been kept ready to catch the leopard if camera traps indicate its presence in the area, he said.
