A new alcohol de-addiction centre equipped with state of the art facilities has started functioning in the city.
Nav Jeevan Kendra, supported by Jaipur's Catholic Diocese, became operational on Saturday at Lalarpura near Heerapura here.
"The church took up the cause as its responsibility as alcohol abuse has become rampant in the city and the surrounding areas and what is worrisome is the number of youth taking to this abuse," Oswald Lewis, Bishop of Jaipur Diocese, said.
The centre has individual self-contained rooms and large dormitories along with a lecture hall and a refractory among other facilities, Padma Shri awardee Father Joe Pereira, who would be collaborating in its running, said.
"Alcoholism and drug abuse are proving a major social challenge to Rajasthan society. While the western parts of the state such as Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Barmer, Jalore and Pali have more people afflicted with habit of addiction to opium and its derivatives, other parts of Rajasthan, including Jaipur are under the grip of alcohol," a release said today.
