Welcoming the new crop insurance scheme announced by the Centre, Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel today said it will end farmers' woes.
"This is a historic day, earlier problems of farmers were discussed but no government could find out solution to the problems which has led to suicides by farmers," Patel told reporters here.
"Prime Minister Narendra Modi's initiative will resolve all the major issues faced by farmers due to crop failure," Patel said.
"When Modiji was chief minister of Gujarat he had time and again made request to the Centre to bring a farmer friendly crop insurance scheme," Patel said, adding that her government had also discussed this issue in NITI Aayog meetings.
The new crop insurance policy will come as a major relief to farmers. It has removed most of the anomalies faced by the farmers under the old scheme, Patel added.
Patel skirted the question on number of deaths of farmers due to crop failure by saying that there is no such issue in Gujarat.
Gujarat BJP president R C Faldu too hailed the scheme saying that it will come as a major relief to the farmers who have been facing problems due to erratic rains.
Centre today announced a new Rs 8,800 crore crop insurance scheme, with significantly lower premium, to cover for loss of crop to natural calamities, replacing the old scheme.
