new lease of life scheme to rehabilitate mentally challenged
Press Trust of India Madurai : The Tamil Nadu Government's "New lease of Life" scheme would rehabilite a group of mentally challenged people restored to normal health by S S Chellamuthu Trust and Research Institute, District collector L Subramaniam said.
The Collector, who thought of a novel plan to help and rehabilitate mentally challenged patients, said the administration found that cattle rearing would go a long way keeping the cured patients occupied and also earn revenue.
Under the scheme, to be jointly implemented by Mahindra Consulting Engineers Ltd, Tamilnadu Animal husbandary and medical science University and the Trust, cured mentally challenged persons will be given skill training in taking care of cattle and earning maximum revenue by rearing them.
The collector,who launched the scheme,said cattle rearing would be a profitable venture for the beneficiaries. Besides cows, they would be given sheep also to care for. The training would improve the standard of their living,he said and urged them to make maximum benefit out of the scheme.
He also offered the administration's help to them to buy more cows on loan.
