To accommodate roadside vendors and reduce traffic congestion, Sambalpur Municipal Corporation is constructing a new vegetable market at Shantinagar area in this western Odisha city.
The market is being developed over an area of 4,500 sq mt at an estimated cost of Rs 48 lakh.
"More than 200 vegetable vendors can be accommodated in the market. Work on the market is going on in full swing," Deputy Commissioner of SMC, Sudhansu Bhoi, said.
The work on construction of boundary wall has been almost completed. Concrete platforms of 6 ft X 8 ft are being constructed in the market. Moreover, internal road with paver block over it and toilets will be constructed in the market for the convenience of the customers and the vendors.
The SMC has set a target to complete the work by May this year, Bhoi said.
"The vendors, who are operating along the road from Ainthapali to Budhjaraja, will be accommodated in the market," he said.
The Ainthapali-Budhraja road, which is considered the entrance way to Sambalpur city, is one the busiest roads in the city.
Several vendors are seen operating their business occupying the road space on the busy road causing severe traffic problem.
