New War Memorial inaugurated in Tripura
Press Trust of India Agartala Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar today inaugurated a new War Memorial here on the occasion of 'Vijay Diwas' which commemorates the victory of Indian Army against Pakistan in 1971 leading to the creation of Bangladesh.
The earlier War Memorial was shifted due to widening of roads in the state capital.
The chief minister said that during different times of trouble, the help of army was sought and they extended their all out cooperation to his government.
"I would request the army to always remain integrated with the common masses and be their friends because without their cooperation nothing is possible," he said.
A press statement issued by the army said, "Operation Cactus Lily' was launched on Dec 3, 1971 by the Indian army in the erstwhile East Pakistan, and on Dec 16 they accepted the unconditional surrender of 93,000 Pakistani troops and the day is celebrated as Vijay Diwas."
The Border Security Force and Border Guards Bangladesh exchanged sweets near border outposts along the 856-km long border with Bangladesh, BSF officials said.
