New Year welcomed in Punjab, Haryana

Festive atmosphere prevailed across Punjab and Haryana as people celebrated to usher in the new year, with fireworks lighting up the night sky at many places.
People thronged busy market places, shopping malls and hotels at Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Gurgaon, Hisar, Faridabad and Rohtak last night to mark the start of 2015.
In Chandigarh, revellers gathered at the city's main commercial area-Sector 17 as people welcomed the new year.
However, despite heavy police presence, some revellers indulged in unruly behaviour in Sector 17 and also threw litter all around the place.
Many youngsters and couples also made a beeline to discos and night clubs here.
Police in strength had been deployed around the city to ensure that New Year celebrations passed off smoothly.

No major untoward incident had been reported from anywhere and nearly 100 challans had been issued to the violators of drunken driving offence here last night, police said.
People also made a beeline to the shopping malls, market places in Gurgaon of Haryana while similar scenes were also reported from many other parts of the state and neighbouring Punjab, with some people bursting firecrackers to celebrate the occasion.
Music performances and cultural programmes were organised at several places. Since early morning today, a large number of persons thronged the holy shrines across the two states, including the Golden Temple in Amritsar.
