The infant boy, whose thumb was severed allegedly by a nurse at a government hospital in South Dinajpur district, was today sent to a Kolkata hospital for further treatment.
The district health department received the suspension order of the nurse following announcement by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee that she should be terminated from services.
District Chief Medical Officer of Health Sukumar De said the eight-day-old child was now being taken to Kolkata in an AC ambulance for treatment, when asked if there was possibility of re-attaching the severed part.
Earlier, Banerjee had said, "I feel she should be terminated from services immediately. She has no right to work. Because this is not just negligence, but crime. You can't just neglect your patients."
De said the district health department was acting on the suspension order issued against the nurse from Kolkata with immediate effect.
The infant was admitted to the Sick and Neo-natal Care Unit of Balurghat Hospital with diarrhoea on July 6 and his left palm was covered with bandage to administer saline.

As the infant's condition improved, the bandage was being removed on Sunday night when the nurse allegedly severed the boy's thumb and then threw it in a dustbin.
The infant's father had also lodged a complaint with the police over the incident.
Meanwhile, district Congress activists demonstrated against the incident near the hospital this afternoon.
