NGO 'Lok Maitri' today alleged that the waste generated at Pithampur industrial area was being disposed of in an improper manner here under the Madhya Pradesh Waste Management Project, causing serious threat to the environment.
A Hyderabad-based company has been entrusted with the task of disposing the industrial waste generated from Pithampur Industrial area under MP Waste Management Project.
"However, the company is not disposing the waste in a proper manner, which is causing threat to the region's environment," Lok Maitri Coordinator, Gautam Kothari told reporters.
The landfill constructed by the company is "substandard" and poisonous material is seeping into the ground and also in surrounding areas, he said.
As per the law, the hazardous waste, which is to be disposed of in an incinerator is being dumped in a landfill, he said.
Kothari said that a former employee of the company has informed in an affidavit about these "misdeeds" to the Union Environment Minister, Central Pollution Control Board, Madhya Pradesh Pollution Control Board and Divisional Commissioner, Indore.
